Jo Serrapere's My
Blue Heaven
|
The first thing you notice when you see Jo Serrapere play live is her voice. It is an otherworldly voice, an alchemic mixture of sadness and joy, blues, jazz and rain. The way it curls up like a cat and slinks its way through her intense original songs, only to spring for your throat at the last second. The way she can transport you to the Mississippi delta or to a smoky club in Philadelphia, or right in to the mind of a woman at the edge of something she can't quite see.
You won't forget the first time you hear her voice. Thursday Records/One Man Clapping is very excited to bring Jo's voice and songs and her talented, blues-soaked trio to the rest of the world with the release of My Blue Heaven. CD
"My Blue Heaven is the perfect title for my CD for many reasons. It longs for nostalgia as do I in my covers of CC Rider and John Henry's (You've Been a) Good Ol' Wagon. But my deep respect for the timeless struggle and wisdom of the past weaves inspiration throughout all of my song writing. I respect the great old blues and jazz singers who created their own power and freedom and influenced the spirit of a less-than-welcoming majority. And then there is the grief of a woman struggling to define her own divinity through her circumstances and even her own choices, through the ghosts of her past and the reality of her present. I believe this is timeless whether she existed a century ago in the great American frontier or as today's teenage prostitute.
I guess I respect the struggle and pain that must exist to define the beauty of being human. And that is divine to me - My Blue Heaven."
